BIO
Lamar Brown is a blind athlete and a long-time member of Achilles International (a not-for-profit organization encouraging athletes with disabilities to compete in mainstream athletics) since 1999, and continues to consistently participate in their weekly workouts twice a week. As a result of his commitment, he was selected by Achilles staff to receive their Top Male Athlete award in 2009. The award is presented to an athlete with disability whose dedication, perseverance, enthusiasm, and athletic success inspires all Achilles members to pursue their goals.
Lamar's situation isn’t unique. There are 21.2 million blind adults in the United States according to a 2006 National Health survey and this number doesn’t include the number of blind Americans under the age of 18. This statistic is relevant because the number of blind athletes (TRI 6) competing in multi-sport World Championships pales in comparison. Only eight athletes competed from 2004-2009. Lamar is dedicated to changing that. Last year, he trained and competed in his first triathlon and loved the challenges of multi-sport. In his second duathlon, he was able to achieve an age-group podium spot.
This year, Lamar has been focusing relentlessly on improving his running and cycling form. He also competed in the Duathlon National Championships on April 25th, 2010 and became the TRI-6 National Champion.
